Bathroom Beauty Design Winner

IN DANVILLE, A CUSTOM-BUILT MEDITERRANEAN HOME GETS A BATHROOM THAT LIVES UP TO THE OWNERS’—AND DESIGN FOR LIVING’S—VISION OF A LUXURIOUS TUSCAN VILLA.

Homeowners Rebecca and Keith Wood loved their custom-designed Mediterranean home in Danville, but always felt that the quality of the interior design—in particular the materials used in the bathrooms—didn’t match up with the exterior. “In the master bath, everything lined up on one wall, and there was no natural light,” says Rebecca. “It left you feeling like you were in the middle of a tract home.” The couple enlisted the help of Rebecca’s brother, Cincinnati interior designer Beau Bolce, to upgrade the master bathroom “to the level that the house should support,” says Keith. Using warm, travertine marble flooring highlighted by luxurious Italian silk Roman shades and hand-carved darkwood vanities topped with emperador marble, the Woods brought a gracious Old World sensibility to the room. Multiple doors and windows, and a walk-in double-headed stone shower and skirted air tub created space, light, and a sense of serenity. “Now it feels like you’re on vacation in an Italian villa,” says Keith.

Keith and Rebecca Wood, Danville, California

Design challenge: To resolve the stylistic disconnect between the dark, cramped master bath and the open, airy Mediterreanean design of the rest of the house.

Jury Comments
With a tub that seems ripe for a long, bubbly soak and extensive use of creamy travertine marble that evokes a sense of serenity, the Woods were able to create an inviting Italianate look without spilling over into fussy opulence. The bathroom looks roomy and open, and the materials, colors, and furniture, are rich and refined. This bathroom has both an elegant and contemporary edge.
